Supporting Families During the Holidays at Pleasant View Home

The Christmas season is often filled with traditions, family gatherings, and cherished memories. When a loved one lives in a nursing home, the holidays can bring a mix of emotions — joy, sadness, gratitude, and sometimes guilt. At Pleasant View Home, we understand how difficult this time of year can be for families navigating Christmas with a loved one in long-term care.

You are not alone, and support is always close by.

Navigating the Holidays When a Parent Is in a Nursing Home

Many families search for guidance on how to handle Christmas when a parent is in a nursing home. The truth is the holidays may look different—but they can still be meaningful. Choosing skilled nursing care is an act of love that prioritizes safety, comfort, and quality of life.

At Pleasant View Home, we focus on creating a home-like environment where residents feel cared for, respected, and included—especially during the holidays.

Spending Christmas in a Nursing Home: What Matters Most

When families think about spending Christmas in a nursing home, they often worry about doing enough. We gently remind families that presence matters more than perfection.

A short visit, a shared cup of cocoa, listening to Christmas music, or simply sitting together can bring comfort and reassurance. Phone calls, video chats, and handwritten Christmas cards are also meaningful ways to stay connected during the holiday season.

Creating New Christmas Traditions in Long-Term Care

Many families wonder how to celebrate Christmas with a loved one in long-term care. Creating new traditions can help keep the season joyful:

  • Decorating your loved one’s room with familiar holiday decorations. The only stipulation is no live trees. Lights, cards, ornaments, and your loved ones favorite holiday items are welcome and encouraged
  • Bringing in family photos or favorite ornaments
  • Watching Christmas movies together
  • Listening to cherished holiday hymns or songs
  • Attending Pleasant View Home’s Christmas activities, parties, and worship services

These moments help bring the spirit of Christmas into everyday life.

Holiday Activities at Pleasant View Home

During the Christmas season, Pleasant View Home hosts festive activities designed to encourage connection, joy, and comfort. From seasonal décor to special events, we work to ensure residents feel celebrated and supported.

We hosted our second annual Christmas Concert, hosted neighborhood Christmas parties, and enjoyed Christmas themed crafts and activities.

Our staff goes above and beyond to ensure each of our residents knows they are loved and valued every day, and this year we showered them with love from our Adopt A Resident angel tree.

Families are always welcome to participate in holiday events and share in these special moments. Seeing familiar faces during the holidays provides reassurance and comfort for our residents.

Letting Go of Guilt During the Holidays

It’s common for families to experience guilt aboutplacing a loved one in a nursing home, especially at Christmas. We want families to know that choosing Pleasant View Home means choosing compassionate, individualized care.

Your love and involvement continue to make a difference—through visits, phone calls, and the trust you place in our care team.

Finding Peace During Christmas in a Nursing Home

Christmas in a nursing home may not look the same as it once did, but it can still be filled with warmth, love, and meaningful connection. Often, it’s the quiet moments—shared smiles, familiar songs, gentle conversations—that become the most treasured.

From all of us at Pleasant View Home, we wish you peace, comfort, and joyful moments this Christmas season.
